Frequently Asked Questions
Instruction & Workshops
Do you photograph yourself while on tour?
I do. I also don’t. There are times I don’t even bring my camera with me. I’ve been to these locations multiple times, so although I’m consistently blown away by them, I don’t have a need to always be shooting. First and foremost, my focus is on the participants. If you need me to hold your hand, I will. If you need me to give you some limited direction and then space, I’ll gladly do that as well. That being said, if the light is going off and everyone is comfortable doing their thing, I’m going to be going gaga alongside you.
Why do you only offer a limited number of workshops per year?
I want to make these group excursions special. They usually happen during something that only happens once or a handful of times per year. I also want to keep my calendar open for other things that I enjoy. These include private instruction, being a husband, dad, farming, and, of course, venturing into new territory to explore and shoot by myself or with close friends.
I want to go on one of your tours, but am unable to make the dates offered. What are my options?
Private instruction is the way to go. Feel free to explore all of the various galleries to see if there is another location that excites you.
Why don’t you offer lodging?
Because I secretly want you to camp. There’s something special about waking up, zipping out of your sleeping bag, and either already being on location or starting your hike without turning on an ignition. Plus, extra sleep (including convenient naps).
Can I rent camping or backpacking gear?
I have a limited amount of extra backpacks, tents, and other gear. So, yes; however, they will be subject to availability. The items available for rent are made up of the same high-quality equipment that I use myself.
Are the backpacking trips hard?
Yes, but extremely rewarding.
Why don’t you offer transportation?
I have a fully capable 4x4, so happy to discuss options; however, I've taken out most of the seats for sleeping purposes. Because, priorities. This brings me to another point - whether you camp or not, you’ll be learning a whole lot more than just photography skills.
Why is the post-processing Not included or done at a later date?
The tours are designed as if I was on a trip myself. I don’t bring a laptop into the field, so I’m not going to expect you to either. The short duration of these trips can go by quickly and trying to squeeze in post-processing instruction can prove difficult. This allows us to be nimble and not tied down to a certain schedule. Some of my all-time favorite scenes have been captured in between lackluster sunrises and sunsets during the middle of the day. Also, there are so many fantastic photographers out there with excellent post-processing tutorials for purchase. Happy to recommend Alex Noriega, Elia Locardi, Eric Bennett, and Ted Gore, as they have all been influential to my development.
