The last rays of sun touch a small ridge above the Northern section of the Bisti Badlands.

Enjoying some soft morning light while being sandwiched by hoodoos in the Northern section of the Bisti Badlands.

Otherworldly. Mars. Strange. Whatever you want to call it, it’s perfect. Hoodoos galore in this landscape of unlimited compositional opportunities.

Start hiking from the trailhead and go back. Then back further. Keep going. You’ll find this. I don’t know what this all is. But it’s cool. Add in full moon rising and you’re golden.

You can take recommendations from others. You can follow in others’ footsteps. Or you can create your own. Be bold.

It’s LIke Stepping onto another planet

Enchanting. Otherworldly. Remote. Kind of strange. The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a maze of badlands offering some of the most unusual scenery found in the Southwest. Devoid of hiking trails, this is an incredibly unique landscape to discover in New Mexico.

The washes of the Bisti Badlands are full of petrified wood. Who needs a National Park? Head here instead.

Of course the tree is “dead”. But define dead. Because it looks like there’s a whole other world living on top of this section of petrified wood.

The colors of the desert sure are subtle. Check out this piece of petrified wood.

In case you’re interested, petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when trees are buried by layers of mud and ash for untold years. And then weird stuff happens with groundwater and sediment and stuff.
